Labor Day, on May 1st , has its origins in workers' struggle for better working conditions and labor rights. It emerged at the end of the 19th century, after the Haymarket Rebellion in 1886, when workers in various parts of the world protested against long working hours, low wages and precarious conditions. On that day, workers took to the streets to protest for shorter working hours. The protests culminated in clashes with police, resulting in the deaths and arrests of protesters. The date was made official as International Workers' Day by the Socialist International in 1889. Since then, it has been marked by demonstrations and events in defense of labor rights around the world.
